Shapes

I finally had a full day in the studio today. I thought I’d share this pic of what I’ve been working on. It’s the starting point for a new series of images.

SATURDAY 4 MAY | 6 – 8PM | ADMISSION FREE

ABSTRACT MOVEMENT
Alison Clifford and Graeme Truslove, Kim Coleman, Tom Dale, Katherine Gallacher, Hannah Knights, Ion Lucin, Emma Macleod

Talbot Rice Screen presents an evening of abstract video works installed within and around the paintings and sculptures in the ‘Drawn Away Together’ exhibition.
The videos, selected from an open-call, span a broad range of moving image media including found footage, live action and computer-generated imagery. Like the works in ‘Drawn Away Together’, they explore and reveal the diverse and elusive nature of ‘the abstract’.

The evening will also include readings of the collective poem devised during artist Kevin Henderson’s Creative Writing Workshop ‘Once somewhere, somewhen’. The readings will be conducted by participants of the workshop.

This is a FREE event, all welcome.

Open Studios at Art’s Complex

The Art’s Complex is opening it’s doors once again this weekend! Come, come, come…

We have a new addition at 6:15 in the form of visual artist Amy Cameron! This is the first time Amy has opened her studio space to the public. She works in mixed media creating layered paintings that consider memory, personal history, storytelling and identity.

Artist jewellers Nicola Turnbull & Fiona Hermse will also have their spaces open.
Nicola’s been busy making new articulating jewellery with beautifully coloured enamel sections alongside prints and drawings.
Fiona’s extensive collection of jewellery influenced by a recent trip to Peru are also worth checking out. She uses intricate and delicate details of lace & knitted wire in her designs.

I will be showing some recent photographic & moving image work too. Including an animation in development that Fiona and I are working on called Limbic Space.

70 artists in the building will have their studios open to visitors so plenty to come and check out, including the members exhibition at the Art’s Complex Gallery on floor 3.

Resonate – an exhibition at Coburg House Gallery

I’ve been a little quiet on the blog front lately and mostly because I’ve been manically making work for a new exhibition…

Resonate is collective exhibition in print, moving image and jewellery by five Edinburgh based artists and jewellers.

Each of the artists are exhibiting work that responds to the theme of resonance.  We’ve been keeping a website & blog with info about the show, our thoughts & works in progress, check it out: resonatecollective@wordpress.com

Resonate Exhibition Flyer 5th to 17th October 2012

The exhibition preview is this Friday 5th October, 6pm to 9pm (all welcome).  I’ll be exhibiting new work in moving image, including a collaborative animation with Fiona Hermse.

The exhibition runs from 6th to 17th October at Coburg House Gallery, Edinburgh.

Better get back to the manic art making…..

“Elbow Room” – Reflections on a Pop-Up Exhibition

Last weekend three other artist and I put on a pop-up exhibition in a flat in Edinburgh. It was a good weekend with over eighty visitors, art and a plethora of tea, cake & gin.  Thanks to everyone who came along!  Below are some photos and info on how it all came about.

Elbow Room 17th to 19th August 2012

“Elbow Room” came about in a last minute fashion – I guess the way a pop-up show should. At the launch of the Edinburgh Art Festival (a couple of weeks ago), Jessica and I bumped into Craig Cross who runs ArtSpace2Let. After chatting away for some time, Craig mentioned that a flat he rents out was inbetween tenants and offered it to us to put on an exhibition.

After considering our work, common interests and other artists,we got together with Sarah Connolly and Emma ES Taylor and went about planning Elbow Room.

We were lucky in the sense that the flat was quite a blank canvas with neutral colours, but not clean and pristine like a gallery space – it still had a domestic & lived in feel. It also boasted a mini garden on the street where Emma ES Taylor exhibited her sculptures. Because of their bright, glossy colours & bold shapes they really caught the eye of passers by.

Bringing our work together was a common interest in simplified forms. Sarah exhibited 9 new works in watercolour and graphite, taking their interest from architecture and town planning. Jess exhibited 4 prints, evocative of domestic spaces. Emma also exhibited 2 prints  and I exhibited some new impossible/polariod photographs and two moving image works.

What was really interesting was the mix of people who came to the show. We put lots of posters & flyers around the immediate local area. Summerhall festival venue was pretty close by, so a number of people had seen our posters around there and wandered along to our show. Neighbours from the surrounding flats popped along for gin at the opening and through out the weekend. It was great that the neighbours seemed to really be up for the exhibition, and genuinely pleased that something was happening on their street. It was great to meet lots of lovely people living on Moncrieff Terrace, by the end of the weekend many said hello & stopped for a chat as they passed by.

Emma ES Taylor and Jessica Crisp

My main reflection is the need to just do exhibitions. Get together with other artists who have similar interests and put on shows and actually make things happen. Exhibiting during the festival and near a main venue, worked in our favour. At this time of year Edinburgh expects the unexpected and as such people are really open to just wandering about and seeing things.
